.:: In Memory of DS Batina ::.
June 13, 2006

It is with great sadness that I report the passing of DS Batina at the age of 27. This picture was taken just a few days before she died.

Batina was recused from a hock stable in Volusia County on June 6, 2002, with donationg from Ocala AHA and several members of OAHA and Region 12. Her full sister DS Aatifa, a well-known halter mare shown by Jack Thomas in the late 1970's, had been rescued by Horse Protection Association of Florida a few months earlier from the stame stable. Until now the two Ansata El Nisr daughters has never been seperated since Batina's birth.

Aatifa, 5 years older and in much poorer health than Batina, did not survive much longer and had to be euthanized a few months after her rescue.

Batina regained her good health quickly and was presented at the 2002 OAHA Championship Show in November. Even though she had not been shown in many years and was seen to be lame (from a hoof abscess) going from her stall to the ring, when she entered that in-gate, she knew exactly where she was and showed herself as if she were still competing. I don't think she limped one step, though I tried to keep her at a walk.

FOr the past four years she has lived happily in pasture here at Chic Arabians, serming to get younger everyday. After exhibiting symptoms of mild colic on the evening of June 12 at the begining of tropical storm Alberto, she was re-examined the following morning and had strong clinical signs of an obstruction in the small intestine.

After considering the possible alternatives that further testing could provide, I decided not to prolong her pain and suffering but to let her go peacefully and to be reunited with her sister. She was euthanized midday and when she left she took the last of the storm with her.
